Murray Ward is one of the four municipal wards in the City of Quinte
West, Ontario, representing the territory of the former Murray Township.
- Early Settlement & Indigenous Roots: The land has been home to
Indigenous peoples for thousands of years, including the Anishinabek, Huron-Wendat,
Haudenosaunee (Iroquois), and the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte First Nation.
- Amalgamation (1998): Murray Township officially became Murray Ward
on January 1, 1998, when it amalgamated with the City of Trenton, Sidney Township, and
the Village of Frankford to form the City of Quinte West.
- Infrastructure Development: The ward is home to the Murray Canal,
a significant 19th-century engineering project that connects the Bay of Quinte to Lake
Ontario, providing boaters access to the Trent-Severn Waterway.
- Heritage Sites: Notable landmarks include historical schoolhouses,
such as the Wessels Schoolhouse, which dates back to a Crown patent in 1846 and
showcases Prairie Style architecture.
- Murray Ward is the fastest growing ward in the city of Quinte
West.
